From May 2nd to October 7th, 2024, Brazilian contemporary artist Ernesto Neto unveils his most expansive exhibition in Portugal at the Museum of Art and Technology (MAAT), Lisbon. At the heart of the show lies an immersive installation, representing one of Neto’s largest sculptures to date. Drawing inspiration from the caravels that set sail for what would come to be known as the Americas, Neto intricately weaves together images of sails and materials such as canvas and ropes.

In line with the artist’s aspiration to craft a truly inclusive and varied experience, visitors to the exhibition can also engage with various drums sourced from different origins scattered throughout the installation. The episode follows the development of two new typefaces, Decimal and Parliament, giving viewers a glimpse of the many different kinds of research that inform type design. For the Decimal typeface, inspired by the lettering on wristwatches, viewers get a close-up look at primary sources, captured directly through the lens of a stereoscopic microscope. For Parliament, a visit to Green-Wood Cemetery involved a survey of inscriptional lettering — and captured a genuine, unscripted discovery on camera.
Early 20th century
The Tadao Ando-designed exhibition focuses on Zeng Fanzhi’s ambitious practice of redefining the abstract through figurative representation and vice versa. The artist’s new oil paintings emerge from decades of research in color theory, drawing on and challenging Impressionism and Pointillism, whereby images materialize only through the careful placement of individual color marks. Here, the brushwork creates figurative elements readily recognizable from afar but, when viewed up close, dissolve into the materiality of oil paint. Tonal variations in one color give way to interwoven schemes of colors, often with more than 30 types of bright pigments in one image. The installation provides an in-depth glimpse into his command of the medium, his wet-on-wet technique, and the emphasis on the sheer materiality of paint that defines his work. In a world now inundated with AI-rendered images, Zeng challenges viewers to recognize the superiority of painting as a time-honored art and craft.

Employing imagery reminiscent of sails and materials evocative of transatlantic voyages, such as canvas and ropes, Ernesto Neto (find more here) crafts a series of installations encompassing the various dimensions of the space at MAAT (find more here). Primarily utilizing chintz, a cost-effective cotton fabric prevalent in Brazil and often adorned with vibrant floral motifs, Neto intricately cuts and crochets the material’s strips with various collaborators’ assistance. This technique, honed over years in the artist’s studio in Rio de Janeiro known as atelienave, forms the basis of the sculpture, composed of interconnected cells. Guided by a freehand approach, the overall design of the work evolves through experimentation and adjustments facilitated by specialized software, ensuring both precision and adaptability to the unique characteristics of the space during installation.
They’re not necessarily inventing a new language, but they’re honing the way that words get printed on a page. They’re not shattering gender constructs on their own, but they’re providing a framework for playing and creativity. “Abstract” can often be enlightening and inspiring, but these 45-minute documentary profiles often feel specifically geared to elicit only those responses. When taken in full, much of this series feels like the finely-produced bit of marketing to which these individuals’ contributions often contribute. None of this is necessarily an indictment on the overall visual craft in “Abstract.” There’s an emphasis on presenting these ideas in a visually engaging way, to the point where it’s admirable how much the series is built on requiring viewers to pay attention. It’s inherent in the show’s premise that these ideas and concepts require a certain amount of illustration, demanding eyeballs even if they weren’t so appealing and aesthetically grabbing to begin with. “Abstract” often makes the case that these designers are fundamentally shaping and shifting the way we see the world.
